Coaching

Swimming New Zealand runs a range of courses from basic courses for teaching learn to swim, through to internationally recognised coaching courses.

  • SwimSafe
  • Swim Fantastic
  • New Zealand Certificate in Swim Teaching
  • Teaching Swimmers with a Disability
  • Diploma in Swim Teaching
  • Skill Coach
  • Development Coach
  • Performance Coach

Courses include workshops, practical sessions and theory requirements which provide a pathway from those interested in expanding their knowledge in swimming.

Enrolment Procedures

Enrolments for Swimming New Zealand education courses must be received by Swimming New Zealand at least 1 week prior to the course date. For Coaching School enrolments, 3 weeks prior. Other key enrolment procedures are:

  • Ensure you forward your enrolment form to the correct address
  • Enrolments must be received no later than 1 week prior to the course
  • All enrolments must be accompanied by full payment
  • All courses require a minimum of 10 confirmed attendees to run
  • Courses with less than 10 confirmed attendees may be cancelled or postponed
  • All 5 working days for posting your enrolment forms
  • Cancellations must be received 48 hours prior to the course
  • No attendance at courses will forfeit enrolment fees

 

SwimSafe

SwimSafe is the nationally recognised learn to swim and personal survival programme. Integrated into the Health and Physical Education Curriculum, SwimSafe provides an opportunity for those teaching swimming to be trained and qualified in a recognised programme.

SwimSafe is a 'train-the-trainers' programme which provides both the trainer education as well as the student's sequential programme.

Requirements for Certification

  • Attend all sessions of the one day introductory seminar
  • Complete 20 hours of practical poolside instruction
  • Complete logbook

New Zealand Certificate in Swim Teaching (NZCST)

Modules in the New Zealand Certificate in Swim Teaching cover infants, pre-schoolers, school age, adults, and Swimming New Zealand is developing a module for teaching people with a disability.

Aims
  1. To give those involved in teaching swimming and identifiable national qualification
  2. To provide a formal programme of instruction for teachers of swimming
  3. To improve the standard of swim teaching and water safety in New Zealand

Requirements for Certification

  • Attend all sessions of the one day introductory seminar
  • Complete all assignments
  • Practical assessment

Diploma in Swim Teaching Aims

  1. To give experienced teachers of swimming an identifiable national qualification.
  2. To improve the standard of swimming teaching and water safety in New Zealand.
  3. To give those involved in teaching swimming an opportunity for further education.
  4. To encourage teachers of swimming to share knowledge with their peers.

Requirements for Certification to be awarded the Diploma in Swimming Teaching, you must:

  • Either hold four current modules from NZCST or hold 3 modules from NZCST plus the SWD course. Candidates choosing the second option would be required to undergo a practical assessment in the SWD area
  • Recommended age 18 years and over.
  • Hold a current CPR and /or Workplace First Aid certificate.
  • Have completed 500 hours teaching after have completed your last module of NZCST.

Coach Certification and Qualification - NEW SYSTEM

In May 2003 a new coach certification and qualification system was introduced. With this new system the Skills, Development and Performance Coaching levels became available.

SwimFantastic

This course is designed to be an entry course for Level One Coaching and an enhancement course for the SwimSafe Programme. It is concerned with enhancing coaching skills to improve technique in freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke and the teaching and development of butterfly.

Requirements for Certification

  • Attend all sessions of the one day course
  • Complete all course workshops and activities
